Top 5 beaches for disabled people in Costa del Sol
October 08, 2015

Disabled people can perfectly enjoy the beaches of Málaga. Safety has always been a primary concern for authorities when it comes to managing the beaches that make the Costa del Sol so famous.

In recent years, however, city councils have realised that stationing lifeguards and first aid huts along beaches is only the beginning when it comes to ensuring the safety of beachgoers. It is equally important to make sure that beaches are safe and fun environments for people with disabilities also, and in this regard, the Costa del Sol is making every effort to bring its beaches up to standard.

Here are 5 of the best beaches adapted to people with disabilities:

El Bombo (Mijas)

Playa El Bombo – Mijas

El Bombo in Mijas, nera Málaga, is a broad sandy expanse of a beach that takes its obligations to provide an inclusive service seriously. There are ramps and handrails for people with reduced mobility and a dedicated personal swimming support service. Nets and buoys make for a secure swimming area and amphibious seats and crutches are on offer.

Arroyo de la miel (Benalmádena)

One of the things that most stands out about the bustling Benalmádena beach is its sensitivity to meeting the needs of all beachgoers. The section of the beach nearest to the first aid post is dedicated to providing services for disabled swimmers. These services include amphibious crutches and chairs, a gangway way for wheelchairs to access the water and a host of other aids.

Burriana (Nerja)

Burriana Beach – Nerja

Burriana Beach near Nerja is another Costa del Sol favourite that really goes out of its way to cater to people of all needs. Besides the usual services such as amphibious seats and crutches and wheelchair ramps, Burriana Beach also reaches out to people with hearing and sight difficulties by providing hearing and visual aids.

La Misericordia (Málaga)

This Málaga beach offers specialised services for deaf and blind bathers alongside adaptations to allow for wheelchair users to take to the sand and swim with the aid of amphibious seats and crutches. There are three monitors and volunteers on hand to ensure the safety and enjoyment of the beach for the mobility impaired.

La Cala (Mijas)

La Cala de Mijas

This is one of Mijas´s most popular beaches – its unspoilt, golden sands drawing in thousands of bathers every summer and its promenade seducing strollers all year round. Thankfully, the authorities in Mijas have gone the extra mile to make sure that everybody can enjoy its beauty and installed a range of facilities for people with reduced mobility including a personalised swimming support service.
