{"id":1115,"date":"2019-05-30T17:20:03","date_gmt":"2019-05-30T15:20:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sonneil.com\/blog\/?p=1115"},"modified":"2026-06-05T11:16:47","modified_gmt":"2026-06-05T09:16:47","slug":"what-is-a-cala","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sonneil.com\/blog\/en\/what-is-a-cala\/","title":{"rendered":"What is a &#8220;Cala&#8221;?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"bsf_rt_marker\"><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the most picturesque features\nto be found on the Costa Blanca coastline are calas, or coves, in English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Formed by a\nprocess of erosion whereby softer rocks are worn away faster than the harder\nrocks surrounding them, the result is shell-shaped, pocket-sized bays, often\nsurrounded by precipitous cliffs that are fringed by wild flora like Spanish\nfirs, junipers, and oak trees. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their\nsecluded nature can make them a little harder to reach, but all the more\nrewarding when found, and contrasts markedly with the long, sandy expanse that\ncomes to most people\u2019s minds when they think of a Spanish beach. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are some\nof Sonneil\u2019s favourite calas on the Costa Blanca.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">La Granadella, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sonneil.com\/en\/search?q=javea\">J\u00e1vea<\/a> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La\nGranadella is a stunning horseshoe-shaped shingle beach near J\u00e1vea. Surrounded\nby pine forests and overlooked by a castle that offers spectacular views over\nthe bay, its popularity with locals means it can get quite busy in summer. But\nthat doesn\u2019t detract from its beauty, or the quality of the snorkelling on\noffer, allowing you to explore the seagrass beds just off the shore. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cala la Mosca, <a href=\"https:\/\/sonneil.com\/blog\/en\/la-zenia-getting-to-know-orihuela-costa-with-sonneil-2\/\">Orihuela<\/a> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With white\nsand and turquoise waters this is an ideal place to enjoy a cool swim and\nescape from the masses thronging the other beaches of the Vega Baja. The cala\ncan only be accessed by foot or by bike, making it a bit of a trek to get to,\nbut well worth the effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Calas del Cabo de <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sonneil.com\/en\/search?q=santa+pola\">Santa Pola<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The coves\nthat punctuate the Cape of Santa Pola are located in a special protection area\nof great scenic and environmental value. These include the natural coves of\nl&#8217;Aljub, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cuartel,\nand those next to Bancal de la Arena, near which you can find an important marine\nresearch centre called CIMAR. There clear and aquamarine waters are perfect for\ndiving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Calas del Cabo de las\nHuertas, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sonneil.com\/en\/search?q=alicante\">Alicante<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cabo de las\nHuertas, located between Playa de San Juan and Playa de la Albufereta, is made\nup of four coves &#8211; La Calita, Cala de la Palmera, Cala de Cantalar and Cala de\nlos Jud\u00edos. All of which combine shingle and sand and attract visitors looking\nto escape the bustle of Alicante\u2019s larger beaches with their peace and\ntranquility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cala del Penyal, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sonneil.com\/en\/search?q=calp\">Calp<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This small\ncove with transparent waters is located in the shade of the impressive rock of\nPe\u00f1\u00f3n de Ifach and is excellent for scuba diving and fishing thanks to its\nlocation and interesting seabed.
