{"id":1236,"date":"2019-08-16T10:00:04","date_gmt":"2019-08-16T08:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sonneil.com\/blog\/?p=1236"},"modified":"2026-06-05T11:18:40","modified_gmt":"2026-06-05T09:18:40","slug":"diving-costa-blanca","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sonneil.com\/blog\/en\/diving-costa-blanca\/","title":{"rendered":"Top five diving locations on the Costa Blanca"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"bsf_rt_marker\"><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With more than 200 km\nof coastline and some 170 beaches it&#8217;s no surprise that the Costa Blanca offers\nsome wonderful diving opportunities, especially on its rockier northern coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the months of June\nto October, the average temperature of the water is more than 20 degrees. In\nthe months of February and March, the sea is at its coldest, with an average of\n14 degrees Celsius.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The water is\nrelatively calm, free of dangerous currents and home to a highly diverse\nunderwater life. Apart from the Mediterranean fish, you can find rays, sea\nhorses, crabs, octopus and moray eels. Sunfish visit the Costa Blanca coast\nfrom late spring onwards and in September and October sardine and barracudas\nheat along the coast. There are also rich and colourful seagrasses to be\nobserved. Lister below are Sonneil\u2019s top five diving locations on the Costa\nBlanca.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tabarca Island&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Tabarca Marine\nReserve, off the coast of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sonneil.com\/en\/search?q=alicante\">Alicante<\/a>, was the first such reserve to be\ndeclared in all of Spain in 1986 and occupies 1,400 hectares around the entire\nisland. Being one of the few protected marine spaces, it makes for one of the\nmost incredible diving locations on the Costa Blanca and boast of a\nparticularly rich biodiversity beneath the waves. As for its flora, the <em>Posidonia\nOceanica<\/em> seagrass prairies stand out, and as for the fauna, fish such as\ngrouper, gilthead and even some specimens of loggerhead turtle frequent these\nwaters. Of course, diving in the Tabarca Marine Reserve is prohibited without\nfirst getting permission from one of the authorised dive centres in the\nprovince.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Vaporet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 2.6 miles from\nthe port of Denia, lies the remains of a cargo ship, commonly known as El\nVaporet, which sank at the end of the 19th century. The considerable depth, the\nlikely presence of currents and reduced visibility, make it advisable that only\nthose with considerable experience undertake the dive and only under optimum\nconditions. A wealth of fish life inhabits the ruins of the ship, including\nsardines and lobsters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Portixol&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The island of\nPortixol is a nature reserve with a popular bird sanctuary, that also has much\nto offer under the water. Its rocky bottom, covered with seagrass, is inhabited\nby several species of perch, eels and damselfish. The odd squid can also be\nseen. The water is easily accessible from the pebble beach, which is close to\nthe main road, just down some stairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">La Granadella<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Located in the town\nof Javea, this beach is considered one of the best in Spain. It is a dream\nlocation where sea and mountains combine perfectly. Thanks to its turquoise\nwaters, the experience of diving here is unmatched. In La Granadella we can\nobserve white sands alternating with posidonia plains, in which we can see\noctopuses, dorados, nacra molluscs and other underwater species. In addition,\nthe beach is shallow and calm, so it is ideal for those divers who are taking\ntheir first breaths underwater. La Granadella is also an unbeatable place for\nother activities such as sea kayaking.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">El Pe\u00f1\u00f3n de Ifach<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This beautiful dive\ntakes place on the north side of the Pe\u00f1\u00f3n de Ifach, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sonneil.com\/en\/search?q=Calp\">Calpe<\/a>, and is characterised by its rocky\nbottom and the huge arches that have formed in some of the rocks. In this area\nwe can find some of the largest octopuses to inhabit the Costa Blanca, and\nnumerous yellow-crusted anemones. Bream, moray eels, groupers and croakers are\nalso to be seen.
