According to the most recent figures\nthere are around 300,000 British citizens resident in Spain, 40 percent of whom\nare aged 65 and over. According to Spain’s national statistics agency, the\nInstituto Nacional de Estadistica (INE), the two regions with the most British\nresidents are Andalusia, where they number almost 77,000, and the Valencia\nregion, which counts 78,422. Narrowing it down further we find that the\nprovince of Alicante has the highest number of British expats with more than\n69,000. The continued popularity of the Valencian region, and the province of\nAlicante in particular, is further borne out by home sales figures which found\nthat 40 percent of all homes in Alicante were bought by foreigners in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This being the case, Sonneil has looked\nat the top five areas in the Costa Blanca for expat residents and what has\nattracted them there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benidorm<\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Population 69,000<\/p>\n\n\n\n

British expat population 6,000 (8.7%)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Located in the Marina Baixa region of\nAlicante, Benidorm has a long tradition of attracting British tourists and home\nbuyers. This has been boosted by improved transport connections with three\nairports serving the northern (Valencia), Southern (Murcia) and central\n(Alicante) provinces of the region. Dozens of flights a day connect these areas\nto the UK, facilitating those all-important trips home or visits from friends\nand family members. While Benidorm city has a reputation as an all-night party\ntown, you don\u2019t need to go far to find much quieter villages where the\ntraditional Spanish way of persists. In fact, it\u2019s these localities that tend\nto attract the majority of expat buyers thanks to the relaxed pace of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Torrevieja<\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Population 82,600<\/p>\n\n\n\n

British expat population 13,000 (15%)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The former fishing village of\nTorrevieja is today a multicultural city that besides its large British\npopulation is also home to significant numbers of German and Scandinavian and\nRussian expats. Situated equidistant from Alicante and Murcia airports (about\n50 minutes\u2019 drive to each) Torrevieja is blessed with beautiful landscapes\nand 20 kilometres of coastline. For those in search of the great outdoors,\nthere\u2019s the nearby Lagunas de la Mata and Torrevieja nature reserve which hosts\ndozens of species of birds and aquatic animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Orihuela<\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Population: 91,00<\/p>\n\n\n\n

British expat population: 18,834 (20%)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About one hour south of Benidorm and 45\nminutes west of Torrevieja, the town of Orihuela is home to nearly 20,000\nBrits. Easily accessible thanks to direct flights from Murcia airport, which is\nalso just a 45-minute drive away, Orihuela is a city so packed with important\nmonuments that its city centre has been declared a Historical Site. Besides\nthis rich cultural heritage, it also boasts of affordable properties and a cost\nof living that is upwards of 30 percent cheaper than that of the UK on average.\nThe Orihuela coast with its Blue Flag beaches and the many highly rated golf\ncourses in the area add to the city\u2019s popularity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Javea<\/strong><\/a> <\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Population: 27,225<\/p>\n\n\n\n

British expat population: 7,700 (28%)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Javea is a town on the Costa Blanca\nthat lies 90 kilometres north of Alicante and 110 kilometres south of Valencia,\nbetween the capes of San Antonio and La Nao. Javea is divided into three areas,\nthe port district, the Arenal with its beaches and tourist centre, and the old\ntown, its original city walls enclosing a labyrinth of cobblestone streets,\nsquares and picturesque corners. The town sits in the foothills of the Montgo\nMassif, which at 753 m high is home to some of the most unique flora and fauna\nin all of Spain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rojales<\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Population: 17,622<\/p>\n\n\n\n

British expat population: 9,083 (52%)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Rojales<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just 10 minutes\u2019 drive from the\nbeautiful sandy beaches of Guardamar and 15 minutes from Torrevieja, it\u2019s\nlittle surprise that Rojales has become such a draw for UK expats that they now\nnumber slightly more than half of the population. Its close proximity to\nAlicante and Murcia airports – about 35 minutes\u2019 drive to both – add to the\nappeal, as does the nearby La Marquesa golf course. Rojales is famous for the\nbeautiful cave houses which are located in the hills to the south of the town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
