To somebody\nraised outside Spain, it can seem that every other day some festival or other\nis taking place. In fact, in any given year, there are more than twenty public\nholidays throughout the country, some of which are only celebrated in certain\nregions while others are nationwide. Below is Sonneil\u2019s list of the five best\nfestivals to be enjoyed on the Costa Blanca.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Moros and Christians<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The festival of Moors\nand Christians celebrates the reconquest of Spain by the Catholic monarchy\nafter 700 years of Muslim rule in 1492. The reconquest is celebrated annually\nthroughout Spain, but the cities of Valencia and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sonneil.com\/en\/search?q=alicante\">Alicante<\/a> have a particularly strong association with the tradition. Locals dress\nas either Moors or Christians for the occasion and re-enact battles. The two\ngroups fight it out in the streets, which are filled with noise and smoke,\nwatched by thousands of spectators. In contrast, in mid-August, D\u00e9nia\ncelebrates the festival of Moors and Christians as a tribute to the coexistence\nof cultures, highlighting the virtues of tolerance and multiculturalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>San Juan<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fires of St. John\n(Fuegos de Sant Juan) announce the arrival of summer. At midnight, the city of\nAlicante offers a magnificent firework display and papier-m\u00e2ch\u00e9 statues are\nburned during a ceremony called the Crem\u00e1 de la Hoguera. In the afternoon,\neveryone heads to the beach to share a picnic and barbecue grilled sardines or\nmeat. This is followed by the customary midnight swim, which is said to wash\naway bad luck and invite good fortune.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Las Fallas<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Costa Blanca\ncelebrates the famous Las Fallas festival in March, during which giant\nsatirical statues of celebrities or politicians are carried in procession\nthrough the streets before being burned. It is the most important festival of\nthe Valencian community and attracts thousands of tourists each year. While\nValencia itself has the most spectacular Fallas celebrations, there are also\nfestivities in Benidorm, Calpe, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sonneil.com\/en\/search?q=denia\">Denia<\/a>, and Gandia among others.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Carnival<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carnival is perhaps\nmost famously associated with Brazil; however it is in fact widely celebrated\nthroughout the Latin world, including the Costa Blanca. Starting on Ash Wednesday\nand ending on Holy Saturday in the Christian calendar, Carnival serves as one\nlast blowout of excess and debauchery before the austerity of Lent. In\nBenidorm, where the biggest parade takes place, thousands of people turn out to\nwatch the giant decorated floats and dance to the marching bands.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tres Reyes<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of the\nmost anticipated days of the year for children as it is when the Three Wise Men\ncome bearing gifts. At this time of the year the streets are still decorated\nwith Christmas lights, and the squares are filled with Nativity scenes carol\nsingers. On the night of the epiphany, January 6, The Three Kings arrive on\ntheir camels loaded with presents and throw sweets and treats out to the\nthousands of children assembled along the parade route.
