For many\nexpats living in Spain this comes with the extra added procedure and cost of\ntransporting a car to Spain from their country of origin. The following is\nSonneil\u2019s guide to the process involved in registering your car in Spain.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are a Spanish\nresident you must register the car in Spain within 30 days, if you are not a\nSpanish resident you can drive the car in Spain for up to six months before you\nmust get it registered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To register your car you\nwill need to go to the Jefatura de Traffico, offices of which can be found in\nAlicante or Elche and present&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>&#8211; the obligatory application form,\navailable from the local Jefatura de Tr\u00e1fico.<\/li><li>&#8211; your NIE, and proof of address.<\/li><li>&#8211; The original and a photocopy of\nthe Receipt of payment of the local car tax (impuesto municipal sobre veh\u00edculos\nde tracci\u00f3n mec\u00e1nica\/IVTM) and registration tax (impuesto especial sobre\ndeterminados medios de transporte), both of which are available at the Jefatura\nde Tr\u00e1fico<\/li><li>&#8211; Proof of payment of VAT in\ncountry of origin<\/li><li>&#8211; Receipt of purchase of the\nvehicle<\/li><li>&#8211; Certificate of Conformity (Certificado\nde Conformidad) available from manufacturer&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A translation of the vehicle\ndocuments into Spanish may also be required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Spanish vehicle\nregistration offices have also requested proof that the vehicle has not been\nreported as stolen.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>ITV inspection<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vehicle inspection\nprocess for roadworthiness in Spain is called the ITV, Inspection Technica de\nVehiculos and it is mandatory.&nbsp; The first inspection of a brand-new car or\nmotorcycle must be carried out four years after registration. After that it\nwill be every 2 years until the vehicle is ten years old, after which\ninspections must be carried out every year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After passing the ITV a\nsticker will be attached to the windshield bearing the ITV date as proof after\nverification. It should be noted that\nthere is no grace period with regards to completing the ITV. Even if you miss\nthe deadline for inspection by a few days you risk being fined.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Deregistering\na car<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the event of\nderegistration, the relevant forms must be filled in at the Traffic Office in\nAlicante (Jefatura Provincial de Tr\u00e1fico).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In case of theft, you must\nreport to the National Police or Guardia Civil, who will issue you with a\ndocument (Justificante) acknowledging that you have reported the vehicle as\nstolen, which you must bring to the Traffic Office to have the car\nderegistered.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After buying a house, the next biggest investment that most people make is in buying a car.
