Finestrat is a beautiful town in the province of Alicante, very close to Benidorm. It has a unique location, surrounded by the sea and the mountains. Finestrat is located in the middle of the mountains, with its old town at the foot of the Puig Campana, a majestic and abrupt mountain that rises to a height of 1,400 metres, at a distance of seven kilometres from the Mediterranean Sea. This attractive scenery is the reason why Finestrat has become one of the most beautiful and most visited towns on the Costa Blanca. This post will take you on a tour of Finestrat’s cultural and natural offerings, so that all those who want to know what to see and do in Finestrat are sure to find what they are looking for.

What can you do in Finestrat?

Visit the old town

The old town of Finestrat is small, but has a unique charm. It is built on the foundations of an ancient Moorish castle, so it retains the essence of the Moorish Mediterranean villages. With its steep and maze-like streets adapted to the mountain setting, it is a real pleasure to walk through them.

The most popular places of interest are the 18th century Church of Sant Bartomeu, with its slender bell tower, built in the centre of the town; the Font de Carré park; the archaeological museum; the Town Hall and the Castell auditorium, named as such because it was built where the castle of Finestrat used to stand. Today nothing remains of the castle, but it is worth walking up the cobbled streets of the historic centre to reach two very unique jewels: the Santo Cristo del Remedio Chapel, and the emblematic viewpoint of the castle from where you can enjoy fascinating views.

Tossal de la Cala Viewpoint

This is a small hill that separates the cove of Finestrat from the Poniente beach in Benidorm. In its highest part there is a Roman archaeological site from the 2nd and 1st centuries B.C., and the Ermita de la Mare de Déu del Mar, which can be visited. We recommend walking up from the Finestrat cove in order to enjoy the fantastic views of the Mediterranean Sea, Finestrat and Benidorm.

Aguiló Tower

The Aguiló tower is a more recent construction than the Tossal viewpoint. It dates from the 15th-17th centuries, and was an eight-metre high defensive tower built to watch out for piracy, as pirates and corsairs frequently raided the coastal towns to loot them. From the very cove of Finestrat you can set off on a route to visit the tower along a pleasant path that runs through the pine woods. From the top there are fabulous views of the coastline.

Puig Campana

For those who enjoy hiking with high difficulty, you can climb to the top of this mountain from a route that starts at the Font del Molí. This route requires overcoming a difference in altitude of more than a thousand metres. However, you can also choose to do the circular hike around the mountain, which is suitable for larger groups of people. It is worth noting that the views at this altitude are fabulous.
